Feet Swelling

Feet Swelling

Our feet, ankles, and occasionally our legs, swell because too much fluid builds up in body tissues. Usually, the condition is not life-threatening and can be relieved by medications that get rid of the excess fluid, or by self-treatment that can be undertaken at home by the person suffering the malady. The largest proportion of people who suffer from feet and ankle swelling are those who are elderly and by people who are on their feet most of the time. Pregnancy, obesity, and occupations where one is required to sit in one position for long periods of time also increase the likelihood of having feet and ankle swelling episodes. Excess salt in the diet is sometimes blamed for swelling, and some people notice that their feet and legs are more likely to swell in hot weather, or whenever they wear a particular pair of shoes. Swelling is due to fluid retension in the body in pregnancy. It is due to hormone changes of pregnancy and is common. It usually occurs in the feet / ankles and hands / wrists. It can also be noticed in the vulval area, in the face and in the general body. Historically excessive swelling has been used as a sign of preeclampsia though it usually does not indicate this. Also preeclampsia often occurs without significant swelling.
